PPC ZIMBABWE, Rail Loading Station

What we did

This project had two main objectives. First, the Environmental Management Agency in Zimbabwe (EMA) advised PPC that if they did not improve the dust generation at the current clinker rail loading facility, they risked being fined and having the facility shut down. Second, the rail upgrade aimed to achieve a quicker turnaround of the loading process to improve clinker delivery to PPC Harare and Bulawayo, with the potential for export into Africa. Although not a large project, it was an interesting one. All materials were fabricated or procured in South Africa and delivered free-issue to Hogarths on-site. The scope for Hogarths also included all civil works required and the electrical installation of free-issue materials. Hogarths engaged subcontractors as needed to perform these functions. Throughout the project, normal PPC operations continued, including daily coal deliveries to the plant, which produced massive and constant clouds of coal dust over the working areas. The project included the following components: the train loading station complete with bin, loading conveyor, dust extraction system, cladding, and dismantling of the existing feed conveyor.
