Due to collapsing ground conditions in the existing mining areas, the client embarked on a redevelopment program. This involved mining in new directions—namely North and South. Each area was to have its own underground crusher and conveyor system.
Phase I consisted of extensions and upgrades to existing conveyors as well as additional strike conveyors.
Phase III included the construction of North and South underground crushing stations and supply conveyors.
This project highlights the complexities of underground work. Zimplats developed Portal 4 underground mining in a north and southerly direction. This required the detailing, fabrication, supply, and installation of free-issue mechanical equipment for two systems simultaneously while adapting to the evolving underground profiles as mining progressed.
